Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso

At the men’s TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, Kenya’s Benson Kipruto made history by becoming the first man ever to win titles at Boston, Chicago and New York City. In a photo finish with compatriot Alexander Mutiso, Kipruto came out on top by just three hundredths of a second, clocking 2:08:09.

As in the women’s race, the men’s podium saw a Kenyan sweep; Mutiso had to settle for silver, also running 2:08:09, while Albert Korir took bronze in 2:08:57.

The run also marked what was possibly the final showdown between marathon legends Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele. Kipchoge, known as the GOAT of the 42.2K distance, took 17th in 2:14:36; he’s now completed all seven World Marathon Majors, two of which (Sydney and NYC) he checked off this year. Bekele did not complete the run, dropping out after the 17-km mark.

For Canada’s 1,500m New Balance athlete Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, Sunday’s race marked his marathon debut and the conclusion of an incredible professional career. Between having a very short training block of about six weeks and trying out a race 28 times the distance of his signature event, Philibert-Thiboutot put forward a solid effort, clocking 2:26:25 for 21st in the elite race.
